Small Groups!
Wednesday, September 20, 2006
What is Vocation going to look like this year?
- TILT will be the backbone large community for Vocation. Most of us already attend TILT, and I encourage everyone to check it out. If it doesn't suit you, or you prefer Spring Garden in the morning, or you go to another church, that is totally fine. You will still be connected just the same.
- Small groups [3-7 people] will be the core of Vocation. These groups will go further in-depth into what we are experiencing at TILT. Don't go to TILT? We will post the message, handouts, resources, pictures and additional discussion questions. The key is living life together as part of a group of spiritual friends. One person will co-ordinate the group, but anyone can lead any given week.
- Vocation as a group will have consistent and regular missional activities in which we venture into the community to serve and befriend our neighbours. We're hoping to have a regular monthly commitment structured, as well as sporadic events throughout the year. Whenever we gather for these missional activities, there will be plenty of opportunity for social activities (meals, etc.).
I'm already in a small group. Sweet! We would encourage you to check in with a Vocation small group as well, since we will be diving deeper into what is happening at TILT and sharing in serving our community together.
Can I just do the missional stuff? Of course.
Is this really a community still? We believe this structure suits the reality of our lifestyle as students and people beginning careers. We are busy, and spread around the city. The small groups will be made to fit your schedule (ideally!) and reduce the burden on Sundays of having a group meeting and also church. Instead, we will commune within TILT (and the mornings too for some of us!) and within small groups, all connected by regular missional service.

DA VINCI CODE on Saturday Evening

Vocation is going to see The Da Vinci Code this Saturday night, and then when we meet on Sunday will have a discussion surrounding the movie/book...no worries if you don't get to see the movie or haven't read the book though! So, we are going to see the movie at Silvercity at Yonge and Eglinton at 8:00 pm. Some of us will be meeting at the church at 6:30 to be there by 7 pm. Otherwise just meet us there at 7 pm. If you want a ticket in advance, email Andrea at andreatemp@gmail.com by Saturday morning. If finances are an issue, email me at scottgmoore@mac.com and funds from Vocation will take care of it.

TILT on Sunday: The Stations of Holy Week

Come check out TILT (or come per usual if you already come regularly!). This week is a special week in anticipation of Easter where we journey through events from the last week of Jesus' life, his death and his resurrection (I guess you could just read that from the picture...). Anyhow, it should be a great evening of connecting with Christ in our community. 6:30 pm at Spring Garden (www.springgardenchurch.ca).

Want to learn about something?
Are there are Scriptures that you've heard a lot but never really fully understood? Or things you've read and just don't get? Verses people quote all the time but feel that perhaps we aren't really getting what the Scripture is really trying to say? Let me know! Email me scottgmoore@mac.com or just post a comment here! I would love to discuss them at Vocation.
Something New - Meeting February 19th!!
For the next little while we're going to be looking at what some of us might consider 'tired, old' passages from Scripture in a new light. Things we think we are overfamiliar with, but in fact, are quite unfamiliar with! We'll be starting with the Beatitudes and then moving on to the Lord's Prayer. Any ideas are welcome as always.

SMALL GROUPS!
ANDREA TEMPELMEYER: email her
"A small core group of people coming together with different backgrounds and experiences with church. We'll be dialoguing about those experiences, hanging out just as a group of friends, getting into some discussion about issues around faith and walking in life together."Some of the discussions will be based on the book on the right, Velvet Elvis. Click here for some info about it.
BECKI LEE: email her

Similar in spirit to Andrea's group, Becki is going to lead a group going through a book called, "12 'Christian Beliefs' that will drive you crazy". It discusses a lot of common misconceptions that we often believe to be 'truths'. We will share our experiences, frustrations and sort out what really is and isn't 'Christian'. Click here for some details on the book.
SCOTT MOORE: email me

I'll be forming a group that will be journeying together through the book of John. It's my hope that through this we will encounter Jesus as he was in his world and learn who he is to us in our world.
We will be using "Drawn into the Mystery of Jesus through the Gospel of John" to guide us. Check it out here.
YOU?
Nothing quite fitting? Want to form a core group of your own? Just let me (Scott) know!
If you'd like to join one of the above groups, or form your own, email me (Scott Moore) or the respective leader! We can also talk about these on Sunday, or anytime.

Sunday October 12 @ 1:30 PM -- FOOD RUN
Meeting place: Monica’s house @ 58 Stuart Avenue (M2N 1B3 – email me at scottgmoore@mac.com if you need directions)
The plan: Bring between $10-20 of that money you don’t have (or whatever you are able to bring) and we will pool our resources and divide into teams. If you have a car, let me know if you don’t mind driving a team to the grocery store. After the food run, we’ll reconvene at Monica’s house to hang out for a bit as our schedules permit!

POTLUCK RSVP & FOOD
Emailed September 29
thursday, October 6 @ 7:00 PM
Before the holiday weekend, we thought we’d get things going by having our own dinner together! It’ll be an informal, fun time of eating and hanging out. Maybe some movie-watching or game-playing. Whatever people would like!
Where: Not quite sure yet – either Monica’s or my house. We’ll let you know. Monica has ping-pong, I have pool…tough call.
What you need to do: First, let me know if you can come or not. Second, let me know what you are bringing to the dinner. We are going to attempt to do this online, on the blog (http://springvocation.blogspot.com)! I will put a posting up called “Potluck RSVP & Food”. All you have to do is:
- Click on the hyperlink “comments” which is at the bottom of the posting.
- Type in your RSVP and what you are bringing, if you are coming.
- Enter your name and do the word verification (which prevents “spam commenting”).
- You’re done! This way, we can see what people are bringing and then not have everyone bring pumpkin pie (although I would probably eat it all…).
If this is really too much for you, you can email me (scottgmoore@mac.com) and I’ll post it. Try it out though!
Starting an Online Discussion at http://discussvocation.blogspot.com. (You can also get to it from the main page.)
We are all quite busy throughout the week and in scattered places, but with the wonders of technology, I thought it might be fun and beneficial to have some ongoing online discussion. I have started the posting at the website (as above, or just go to the main page and click on Vocation DISCUSS on the side). To add your two (or three) cents, just follow the same procedure as I explained above for the potluck by going to the “comments” section. I have also outlined the process on the DISCUSS blog! Give it a try and hopefully we can have some thought-provoking blogging/commenting/discussing.
Service Ideas or Prayer Needs/Ideas
Got an idea for how we can serve our community or one another? Let me know and I can post it on the Vocation SERVE blog! Some thing goes for prayer. Check back often for updates and the latest.
Vocation FURTHER blog
I’ve added another blog for those interested in further reading of things we might discuss, or just stuff that I think might be relevant for you! If you have any suggestions, let me know and I can post it. (http://furthervocation.blogspot.com).
Looking Ahead:
- Thursday, October 6, 2005 @ 7:00 pm – Thanksgiving Potluck. RSVP!
- Sunday, October 16, 2005 – next group meeting
- Sunday, October 30, 2005 – next next group meeting.
That’s it, sorry this is so long!! All blogs can be accessed through http://springvocation.blogspot.com. I’ll be adding stuff on it about small groups, please check back soon.

Sunday, September 25, 2005 @ 1:30 PM
Here are the details for our next meeting on Sunday, September 25 @ 1:30 p.m.
We’ll be meeting at Monica’s house, and here are the directions:
Monica’s address is 58 Stuart Avenue (not Crescent) and her postal code is M2N 1B3 for any Mapquesters. She lives very close to Yonge & Sheppard. If you are coming from Yonge & 401:
Head north on Yonge Street
· Turn RIGHT onto Florence
· Turn LEFT onto Radine (this is key)
· Go through a bunch of stop signs
· Turn LEFT onto Stuart Avenue and Mon is #58
If you need more clarification or are coming from elsewhere, just email me.
We won’t be having lunch this time around, but if you are able to bring a snack of some sort, please let me know. I’m away until Saturday evening, otherwise I would do it! If people are interested in going out for lunch after church, we can figure that out on Sunday as well.
We are going to be talking about our perceptions of God. Who is God to you? Can you describe Jesus and your experience of him without using “Christianese”? What are some of those phrases or words we use to describe God that just don’t have any real meaning to you? Why don’t they have any real meaning? …just some questions to think about!
OTHER NOTES:
ARGOS GAME: I know a few people were interested in the game. If you are still interested, Monica might be able to get you tickets (for just $18!). Email her at moops75@hotmail.com.
HOCKEY IS BACK: The first Leafs home game for Hockey Night in Canada is on Saturday, October 8. Would anyone be interested in/able to host a get-together to usher in the new season. Leafs fans unite!

Go Leafs Go!

The first broadcast of CBC's Hockey Night in Canada will be on Saturday, October 8th!! I know lots of you are devoted Leafs fans, so let's make a night of it. Does anyone have a big screen TV? And is willing to have people over? Let me know via email.
Any ideas to make the night fun are welcome. We'll of course watch the game and do whatever else people would like!
